Notes: Rare signed copy, inscribed by author to Joseph Wing and dated Jan. 13, 1862 in Brooklawn. Inscription on yellow front free endpaper. Bound in original brown cloth with embossed design and rules on front, back and spine. Title in gilt on spine, somewhat rubbed but legible. Small spot at bottom edge of spine is worn through. Text was printed with two different paper stocks; title page through 228 have extensive foxing/spotting; pages 229 through 372 lack foxing but are age-toned, and pages 373 to 412 use the same paper as the beginning of the book. An errata section at the end of the index would indicate this is not a first printing. Binding is solid and square.
