About the Book

In this warm and intimate memoir, Dr. Tom Carrier invites the reader to join him on an extraordinary journey. With refreshing candor he shares some of the hard lessons of childhood, the seemingly endless process of realizing his dream to become a doctor, and the joys and sometimes gut-wrenching challenges facing those who choose to pursue a career in health care. He brings us into delivery and emergency rooms and recounts his experiences of caring for Native Americans in Gallup, New Mexico, at times with the support of a medicine man. He shares with us the despair of a mother delivering a stillborn infant and the loving support offered to a dying cancer patient by her grieving family. and along the way Dr. Carrier addresses some of the thorniest ethical issues facing society today, including stem cell research and the excessive compensation of some health care executives.

This book is not all about medicine, however. Dr. Carrier also shares his thoughts on marriage, parenting, friendship and faith. In a letter to his grandchildren he says, "Play every game by the rules. Play as if you didn't need a referee or umpire." And, he adds, "Learn from your mistakes - Lord knows we all make them."
